The Statement Vivo CTO Made

The CTO of Vivo and Yujian Shi, the senior vice president said something in a statement:

“We are making a promise to our customers that they will be able to enjoy a premium smartphone experience. For an extended period and continue to benefit from the latest software features”.

With the announcement Vivo made, Vivo is merging a small but growing group of Android manufacturers. Promising 3 years of OS updates for their flagship smartphone. For a long, Google had a similar policy for its Pixel phones.

Also last year, Samsung publicized a “three-generation” OS policy covering some Galaxy devices, together with HMD in April. With a promise of 2 years of Android OS updates and 3 years of security updates on its new X-series phones.

LG Said it would provide 3 years of Android OS updates

LG also said it would provide 3 years of Android OS updates. The same week it mentioned it was stopping the smartphone business.

This year, Samsung included that select devices would. As well receive an extra year of security updates, for a total of 4 years of support.

3 years of OS updates is a very great improvement over the two years. That’s already been the standard for most Android manufacturers. However, in the future, this could expand to as much as 4 years.

In December 2020, Google and Qualcomm, chip manufacturers mentioned that they were trying hard to make it very easy. For manufacturers to provide as many as 4 generations of Android OS and security updates.

Starting with devices that are coupled with the latest flagship processor of Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 888.

The latest policy of Vivo places it in front of fellow BBK Electronics smartphone brands, Oppo and OnePlus. In 2018, the official policy of OnePlus has been to provide 2 years of Android version upgrades. And 3 years of security updates as well.

The most current statement they could find from Oppo says the company provides 2 years of security updates. And also its general policy is to provide 2 generations of Android OS updates.

The figures pale in contrast to the updated history of Apple. In 2020, it launched the latest version of iOS, version 14. On devices as old as the iPhone 6S of 2015, the 5th major update to have been launched on the phone.
